Visit by Master Calligrapher Hajj Noor Deen

Hajj Noor Deen, master calligrapher, visited the University of Melbourne musalla project andIMG_1007 Desypher office on 15 Nov 2009. Famous for his hybrid Arabic and Chinese calligraphy, he is also a scholar in his own right, providing insight into Chinese cultural pluralism otherwise unknown to the rest of the world.

Much had been said about the value of arts and design in Islamic civilisation, but realising its potential towards conveying the message of Islam in the manner that suits its context and locality remain require patience and great effort which are elusive to many.  Hjj Noor Deen has demonstrated an immense effort through his art. the somewhat flow of Arabic calligraphy yet emanates nuances of serpent-like movement in every brush stroke indicates an indegenous identity rooted to his birthplace but at the same time, convey full grasp of Arabic as the chosen language of the Message.
