University of Melbourne Islamic Prayer Facility, Frank Tate Building, Parkville (1999)
Client: University of Melbourne
The Islamic prayer facility or musalla, with its ancillary facilities, was the first purpose built architectural project of this type in Australia, if not globally. Several new initiatives were introduced as new features in such facility – huge pivoted doors that made up a adjustable wall between the male and female areas and unique wudu (ablution) trough design amongst others.
These architectural features were very well received and had become precedents to many other Islamic facilities in Victoria and Australia wide since. This facility was later decommissioned to make way for comprehensive redevelopment of the building. We were given the task to design a new musalla located just outside the central campus area.
