RMIT Islamic Prayer Facility, RMIT Business School, Bourke Street, Melbourne (2000)
Client: RMIT University
The facility is located at RMIT Business School in the city. Locked into the third floor of an existing Melbourne city building in busy Bourke Street presented many challenges in designing and executing this facility.
The use of backlit recessed “domes” within a limited floor to ceiling height maintained a spirituality of place. The boxing out of walls combined with other directional elements helped establish a clear axis for the direction of prayer – particularly pertinent in a space devoid of external outlook.
Flexible-use spaces were also an important design element with foldaway walls and first and second lines of expansion to accommodate a number of user combinations along gender lines.
